Annual Report May 2006
At our annual meeting held May 16, 2006, your long serving officers were reelected for another year. Voted in were Carl Nawrocki, President, Carole Eckart, Vice President, Michele Guertin, Secretary and Lori Tierney, Treasurer. Ann Marie Rios completed her tenure as treasurer for the Building Donation Fund with thanks from all present. Sandy Tiexiera continues as interim secretary while Michele is out of the country.
Last year, the Friends contributed over $6000 in support of our library. Part of this money was spent upgrading the travel, auto repair and medical sections along with major additions to the Youth Library. Your donations to the DVD jar resulted in the purchase of 30 additional films. The Friends purchased another subscription to the rotating Books on CD collection, which essentially doubled the number of Books on CD’s available. The rest of the money was spent on programs like Summer Reading that had 55 children participate. Over 1000 people attended all our programs and we donated 425 volunteer hours. Our best ever used book sale and your membership dues funded most of the activities. Thank you to all those who made such a great year possible.
This year, we are planning an enhanced Summer Reading Program called “Paws. Claws, Scales and Tales”. We have added movies, lives animals demos and a craft program sponsored by the Girl Scouts. We have formed a Youth Advisory Committee we will implement their suggestions by adding sports books and historical fiction and starting a Teen Book Club. We will again work with the library staff to create an E.L. High School reading list section. Programs planned for this fall include Storytime, “ The Art of the Sistine Chapel”, “Cooking with Chocolate” and the return of Celtic music by Tara’s’ Thistle. The Friends will purchase a subscription to a foreign film collection, rotating 200 films over the year. It is going to be an exciting year, won’t you join us?
We are planning on spending over $8000 in support of our library next year with your help.

Sincere thanks go out to the Friends who attending the planning offsite two Saturdays ago at the Colchester Library. It was very productive and entertaining day and group produced goals to guide the Friends for next year and years to come. The group agreed on where libraries were evolving to and the variety of ways Friends can support change.
The goals are categorized into the three main areas as written in our mission statement: direct library support, program support and community awareness. Below are some of the goals that received wide support.
Direct Library Support:
Near Term
Develop closer communications with our library staff members to solicit their ideas and better understand their needs
Have Friends volunteer to allow staff member to be able obtain personal development time during working hours such taking advantage of on-line training offered by the State Library.
Identify and create a plan for non-routine maintenance items such software changes and updates, computer equipment replacement, touch up painting and the like.
Long Term
Research technology advances that support a library without walls such as self-checkout, on-line renewals and the ability to get a list of items checked to you from home
Hire a consultant to evaluate the children’s and YA collections.
Near Term
Present a film night featuring foreign films
Long term
Create a job exchange that would connect part time jobs in the community with teens.
Near Term
Gather data on the cost and value of the library in relation to the Town budget
Hold a tea for our senior citizens
Create a presentation about the Friends contributions to the library and community
Long term
Survey the library patrons for their current and future needs
Work cooperatively with other such as day care centers and home school parents

Our next meeting is our annual meeting where we will be setting the course to meet these new goals. Won’t you consider attending and lending your expertise and knowledge to our efforts?
Carl Nawrocki.

In addition to the used book sale, programs, Storytime, Summer Reading and additions to the collection, The Friends plan to:
Complete the redesign of the Tech Room

Friends News in May reported that the next year’s Town budget eliminated the Friday cleaning of the library and posed the possibility of closing the library on Wednesday. The budget was defeated at referendum. Since then, the funding for library cleaning has been restored and sufficient staff hours have been included forestalling the need for a Wednesday closing. The revised Town budget was sent from Town Meeting to Referendum to be voted on Wednesday, June 6th.
While the budget is favorable to our library, the most important thing is that you Vote. The library budget represents less than 1% of the total being voted on at Referendum. There is the other 99% of the budget that you should consider before casting your vote.
Foreign Film Night
The addition of the rotating foreign film collection has been a great success. Building on this success The Friends are starting foreign film nights, once a month. The films selected for showing are generally not distributed locally for mass entertainment. The showings are free and open to everyone however some of the films are “R” rated. Popcorn and lemonade will be available. Bring a seat cushion or comfortable lawn chair if you wish.
The first film, shown on Monday, June 11th from 7 to 9 p.m., is The Crime of Father Amora. A Mexican drama produced in 2002 in Spanish with English subtitles. This movie is “R” rated. The July film is the English classic, Educating Rita staring Michael Caine shown on July 18th from 7 to 9 p.m. The film in August is Romeo and Juliet, the Royal Ballet staring Rudolf Nuryev and Margot Fonteyn shown on August 15th.More detail is available on the library Web site.
If you were on the Town Green for Memorial Day, there is good chance your saw our Summer Reading Blue Cow. Friends were promoting Summer Reading handing out schedules and red, white and blue pinwheels. We will again follow a national program. It is called Get a Clue and filled with programs, books, movies and stories and crafts focused on pre-K to Grade 4. A full schedule of events can be obtained on the library Web site, Salem-ct-Library.org. Working with Salem School, the library will receive recommended books from the Salem/East Lyme summer reading list for Grades 1 to 6. There also will be a teen book discussion with a mystery theme. As in past years, Friends will create a place for the East Lyme High School reading list books.
Book covering this month will be held on Tuesday, June 12th from 4 to 7 p.m.(note the day change) No experience necessary. Come and join a fun group for conversation, pizza and a few hours of volunteer work.
I am sending out our newsletters electronically in lieu paying the cost of printing and postage. I hope you find it useful. There is always room for improvement, so if there things you would like to see changed, please send me your comments.
Thank you
Carl Nawrocki
