September 2007
Tuesday, September 4th: From 4:00PM to 7:00PM - Friends cover new books to be shelved. volunteer an hour or more. Good friends, good conversation, good pizza and sense of accomplishment. No experience necessary. Questions? Call Bobbie at 859-0609.
Wednesday, September 5th: From 7:00PM to 9:00PM - Foreign Film Nite, "Nine Queens". An argentine thriller about master-pupil con artists. Two grifters team up to pull off a big-time score involving counterfeit stamps known as the Nine Queens. English subtitles. R-rated.
Thursday, September 13th: At 6:30PM. Colchester Regional Chamber Orchestra. The expanded Colchester Regional Chamber Orchestra plays favorite selections of Bach, Mozart, Hayden and more.
Monday, September 17th: From 4:00PM to 6:00 PM. Senior Tea. The Friends will host a tea for all members of the Salem Seniors. There will a tour of the library, an opportunity to renew or obtain library cards and review services and programs offered by the library. Refreshments of tea, finger sandwiches and dessert will be served. Seniors can sign up for the tea at their August or September meeting. All members of the Salem Seniors are welcome. Please sign up at either the August or September Senior’s Meeting.
Monday, September 24th: At 6:30PM. Book Discussion. Join an open book discussion of "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone” led by Anne MacFayden. Attendance size limited. From middle school students to adults.
Tuesday, September 25th: At 7:30PM. The Harry Bingham story, "Courageous Dissent". Author and Salem resident Robert Kim Bingham tells the story of his father, Hiram Bingham IV, who saved many lives during WWII. As an American diplomat, Hiram Bingham issued visas above quotas allowing fleeing Jews to escape the Nazis.
Thursday, September 27th: From 4 to 7 p.m. New Voting Machine Demo. Salem will use new voting machines in the upcoming November elections. Learn how to use them and give them a try. Our Registrar of Voters will conduct the demos. This is also an opportunity to register to vote.
Thursday, September 27th: At 7:30PM. Stonewalls of New England. Join UCONN Professor Robert Thorson to hear about how our stone walls connect a scientific and cultural story about the forces that formed their stones, movements that brought stones to the surface, the glacial tide that broke them apart, and about the humans that built them.
Saturday, September 29th: From 10:00AM. to Noon. I.D. Your Child. Our Resident State Police will create a child’s I.D. card that each child can take home with them. The card contains each child’s photo, fingerprint and vital statistics. The first card is free and additional cards are one dollar each. This is a popular and valuable public service for parents and caregivers.
Saturday, September 29th: At 2 p.m. Henna. Anne Mac Fayden will conduct her popular Henna class. The workshop is aimed at Teens but adults, parents and siblings are welcome. Permission slips required for anyone under 18. Class size limited. Sign ups start September 15th.

Wednesday, October 3rd: From 7:00PM to 9:00 PM. Foreign Film Nite, La Cage aux Folles. A classic. This zany farce portrays a flamboyant gay couple's attempt to appear to be a conventional mom and dad. Misunderstandings and complications arise from the son bringing home his fiancée and her very straight parents. Re-made in the US as “The Birdcage” (1996).France, 1979, comedy, color, French with English subtitles, 110 minutes, rated R.
Saturday, October 6th: At 1:00PM. Christmas Tea Bag - Card Folding Workshop. Karen Jensen will conduct a teabag or kaleidoscope origami workshop where participants will learn to make their own Christmas card in class. Class size is limited to 10 and there is a $10 material fee. Bring your own paper cutting scissors. Sign-up at the circulation desk starting September 22nd.

Thursday, October 11th: At 7:30PM. Quilt Art. Quilt art was our best-attended evening program in 2006 and returns Martha Sielman with a new program and new quilt art. in addition, she is bringing Susan Ferraro with her. Susan, who has been featured on HGTV's Simple Quilts, will talk about the special techniques she has developed featuring felting and fiber optic cable. It should be an engaging and informative evening.
Saturday, October 20th: At 2:00PM. Music of South America. Judy Handler and Mark Levesque play the music of Brazil and other Latin American countries on their guitar and mandolin. The couple has given over 1000 performances throughout the Northeast and Midwest and has been acclaimed by audiences for their remarkable sound and the uplifting spirit of their music.
Tuesday, October 23rd: At 7:30PM. Healing Foods: Eat For Life. The program will discuss smart eating with suggestions to achieve good health and longevity. Also macrobiotic diets will be discussed. The program will be conducted by Linda Wolfe, M.S. R.D.,CDN and Bobbie Ziegra, R.D. Both are nutritionists/dieticians who understand the challenges of eating healthy.
Friday, October 26th: From 7:00PM to 9:00PM (active Friends may enter at 6:00PM). Annual Used Book Sale. 20,000 sorted used books, CD's and more, sorted into 20 categories. Sale is at the Salem School Gym.
Saturday, October 27th: From 9:00AM to 3:00PM. Annual Book Sale continues. Salem School Gym.
*Volunteers needed! Help is needed Friday at 3:00PM for set-up and between 6:00PM and 9:00PM at the sale. Also Saturday from 9:00AM to 4:00PM during the sale and clean up afterwards, and Sunday for sorting from 9:00AM to Noon. Want to volunteer your time? Just a couple of hours will help, call Carl at 859-1641.

November 2007
Wednesday, November 7th: From 7:00PM to 9:00PM. Foreign Film Night: "Yeelen". A classic. The film is set in the 13th centure among the Bambara people of Mali, West Africa, before the coming of Europeans. It follows a young warrior destined to destroy a corrupt older society and secret cult giving way to a renewed purified world. Based on an ancient oral legend, the story reveals a traditional African way of seeing the world. Mali (West Africa), 1987, drama, color, Bambara with English subtitles, 105 minutes, not rated.
Monday, November 12th: From 7:30PM to 9:00PM. CT Wildlife Photography. Join Andy Rzenznikiewicz from the CT Audubon Center in Pomfret for some incredible wildlife films. You may have seen some of his work featured on local TV news where Andy set up sensors to detect and remotely photograph our local wildllife. See raptors including eagles and a variety of mammals.

Thursday, November 8th: At 7:30PM. Fall Friends Meeting. Friends review and capture lessons learned from the 2007 Used Book Sale. The profits are allocated and planning for the Spring begins. Join us and lend us your ideas.
Saturday, November 17th: At 2:00PM. Tara's Thistle, Music of Scotland. The popular Tara’s Thistle duo returns to play music from Scotland. Listen to Bruce play the bagpipes. Both artists play reels and jigs on their guitars, flutes, the pennywhistle, harmonica and bodhran. Always a great time.
Monday, November 26th: At 6:30PM. Book Discussion: "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban". Join an open book discussion led by Anne MacFayden. Attendance size limited. From Middle School students to adults.

January 2007
Friday, January 5th: At 10:30 AM, Storytime!! This popular program for Toddlers (2 to 3 years) and Preschoolers (4 years and above) will be held on most Friday mornings through early June. The Toddlers program will start at 10:30 AM and the Preschoolers at 11:30 AM. Anne McFayden presents a program of songs, stories and a craft. Class size is limited to 10 children.
Wednesday, January 10th: From 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM Book Covering. Friends prepare new books for shelving by covering and stamping them. No experience necessary. Volunteer for a couple of hours, get a real sense of accomplishment and enjoy good company. Questions? Call Bobbie Ziegra at 859-0609.

Wednesday, February 7th: At 7:30 PM Chocolate Cake For Lovers. Just in time for Valentine's Day, Chocolatier Maria Poirier Brandiff returns to teach us how to make a chocolate cake that our significant other(s) will love. Attendance is limited to 30 and a sign-up sheet will be available on January 2nd.
Saturday, February 10th: From 2:00 to 3:00 PM Blue Grass Music. Salem's Tom Vernon and the Eight Mile River Band returns to entertain us with Blue Grass Music. Tom says that there will be less talking and more music. Great family entertainment for all.
Thursday, February 15th: At 7:30 PM Health Directives and Care Representatives. Attorney Joe Cipparone will tell us about the appointment of health care representatives, directives, and living wills. Connecticut has new laws that took effect in October 2006 and we owe it to ourselves and our families to stay informed about this important topic.

Thursday, February 22nd: At 7:30 PM Winter Friends Meeting. Friends meet to plan our Spring and Summer programs. Please note the change in dates from previous announcements. All are welcome. Members, we would love to see you. Non-members, please join us!

Thursday, March 1st: At 7:30 PM Exploring the Natural Wonders of CT. Planning some day trips? Author Brendan Hanrahan, highly-rated lecturer on the natural history of our State and how you can explore it, will be here. His program will also discuss our fisheries as well as the best fishing trips, month-by-month, freshwater and saltwater.

Saturday, March 17th: At 2:00 PM Irish Music. What better way to celebrate St. Patrick's Day than to listen to live Irish music? Join the Tapestry, a folk group playing flutes, harp and fiddle to add to your celebration.
Saturday March 24th: Friends Planning Day. Friends spend a day at the Colchester Library planning near term and long term goals and objectives of the Friends of the Salem Library.

Thursday, April 12th: At 7:00 PM Chamber Music. The Colchester Regional Chamber Orchestra returns to play the music of various composers including Hayden, Bach, Mozart and more.
Saturday, April 14th: From 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM Belly Dancing Demonstration. Unleash your inner self! Come to the belly dancing demonstration and see ladies isolate their muscles, shimmy like sheiks, and undulate like camels! Belly dancing is explained in this one hour demonstration of belly dancing, the one size-fits-all sport that every person can wear beautifully. Come dressed for comfort if you wish to participate in the mini-class after the show. Sahara will lead the dancing with the troupe, House de Lyon, and then will show you how it's done.
Also at 5:00 PM Staff Appreciation Dinner. The Friends will provide dinner for the Library Staff to show our appreciation for all their hard work and dedication.
Thursday, April 26th: At 7:30 PM A Trip to the Everglades. Join Andy Griswold from the Connecticut Audubon Society as he conducts a photographic tour of the Everglades of Florida. The Everglades are one of North America's "ten top birding spots" and hosts unusual birds and other wildlife found nowhere else.
Saturday, April 28th: At 10:00 AM Arbor Day. The Friends sponsor and Arbor Day poetry contest for Salem's Girl Scout Troops. The Girl Scouts will plant a tree with the help of Burnett's Landscaping.

Wednesday, May 2nd: At 7:30 PM Youth Hearing Loss. You think your children do not listen to you now. Just wait! Our children are subjected to loud music, especially through their headsets and constant sound from P.D.A.'s and cell phones. This is a prescription for hearing loss later in life. Join audiologist Elyse Kirshblum get an understanding of what the long-term effects of these sounds are. She will also discuss childhood ear infections.

Wednesday, May 16th: At 7:30 PM Annual Friends Meeting. Friends conduct their annual meeting. Elect new officers for 2007-2008, review 2006 and vote on the plans and budget for next year. Note the change in dates from previous announcements. All are welcome.

Monday, June 11th: From 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM, the first of our Foreign Film Nites!! A film directed by Carlos Carrera and starring Gael Garcia Bernal, this is a story about a young priest who arrives in a small town and finds himself surrounded by hypocrisy and corruption. As the story evolves, the priest is no innocent. Mexico, 2002; drama; Spanish with English subtitles, color, 119 minutes.

Wednesday, July 18th: From 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM, a British film that was based on a play, and was directed by Lewis Gilbert II. Frank Bryant is a professor of literature. Rita, his newest student, thinks Macbeth runs the local pub and Hamlet is a plate of eggs with cheese. He's a failed writer who has given up on life. She's determined to change hers by getting an education. And the more she loves to learn, the more he learns to love Starring Michael Caine and Julie Walters; 1983; 110 minutes
August 2007
Wednesday, August 15th: From 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM. A British film starring Rudolf Nureyev and Margot Fonteyn. A classic story about two star-crossed lovers and their desire to be together despite their families' disapproval. Nureyev, who does much of the dancing, is in the prime of his career in this film. Although Fonteyn is past her prime, she is good. The intriguing music is composed by Sergei Prokiev. 1966; color, 124 minutes.

WHAT PASSES TO LOCAL ATTRACTIONS ARE AVAILABLE AT THE LIBRARY?
The library has several different passes available for checkout. We have a pass which gets four people in free at the Children's Museum in Niantic, and four people in free at the Wadsworth Athenaeum Art Museum in Hartford, We have passes which provide reduced admission (price varies by the season) at Roger Williams Park Zoo in Rhode Island, and we have passes provided by Mystic Aquarium that will admit two adults and two children at reduced admission (price varies by the season). For details, call the library.
**Please note: we no longer accept reserves on passes, such as the Aquarium or Children's Museum. They are available on a first-come, first-served basis. You may call to see if it is available, but it will be given to the first patron who comes in and asks for it. Passes circulate for two days, and the fine for late passes is $1 a day.
